Studying in Xfi

Getting ready for class:

  • As we mentioned earlier, as part of your degree, you will take several modules. You can check which modules you are supposed to be in by accessing your timetable on iExeter. Your timetable will show you the class you are meant to be in, the time of your class, the duration of your class and the location of your class. If you are not sure where the room you are supposed to be in is, you can google the name of the class and you will be directed to instructions.
  • All the materials you will need for your class will be available on our virtual learning environment (the ‘Exeter Learning Environment’, or ‘ELE’ for short). This includes slides for your course, any materials you may need as well as readings.

Learning in class:

Academic staff will deliver content in class. This is a way of guiding your exploration of the content rather than closely dictating what you need to do to pass your assessments. This may be slightly different from school but it is intended to shape you into an independent learner.  You will need to engage in further reading, outside of your timetabled classes. You can start by engaging with the reading on your ELE page.

In fact, most of your work towards achieving the learning objectives of each module will be done during private study time, either alone or in groups. This way of studying might be quite different to how you’ve learnt in the past, so you might find that it takes a short while to adapt.

Do I have to attend all classes?

We expect all students to attend all of these sessions, but if occasionally you are unable to attend, due to ill health, you will usually be able to access recordings or notes as appropriate to the type of session.

I didn't understand something, how do I catch up with the taught content?

Every lecturer will have ‘office hours' each week. These are time slots that academic staff have set aside for individual meetings with students. Use these to get advice about assessments, to ask questions about module topics, or any other module-related query you may have. You can find out more information about these on each module’s ELE pages.
