So now you know a bit more about each other, we will introduce you to some of the key information about people in Psychology Department who will be supporting you through your programme of study.
What does the Department of Psychology look like?
Psychology is based in the Washington Singer building on Perry Road. You can take virtual tours, complete with 360º panoramas, to see what the campus really looks like.
Who works in the Department of Psychology?
The Department is made up of 'Teaching staff' (also referred to as 'Academic Staff' or 'Faculty Staff'), 'Admin Staff' (also referred to as 'Professional Services staff'). Most Academic Staff do research, deliver teaching and manage educational and research responsibilities (including Academic Tutorship).
You can see all staff on this link
First point of contact: Academic Tutors (aka Personal Tutors).
Academic tutors are your first point of contact if you have any queries or concerns- these concerns can include both academic progress and/or well being.
How do I get a tutor?
An academic tutor will be allocated to you as soon as you enrol. Every student has an academic tutor and so, you and other students will share the same academic tutor.
Do I have to meet with my tutor? How do I arrange this?
You will be invited to attend meetings with your tutor- this will be shown on your timetable. The meetings might be scheduled to take place online or on campus.
It is important that you attend so that your tutor knows you are keeping well and also, because your tutor may be able to write a reference for you in future. They cannot do this without knowing you first.
If you want to meet your tutor outside of scheduled meetings, you can absolutely do so. You can contact them via email (you can find their email here: http://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/staff/all/ )

Module Leads.
Your degree is made up of a number of different short courses called ‘modules’. Some of these run across a single term (carrying 15 credits) and some across two terms (carrying 30 credits).
Each module is led by a named academic member of staff, but some are taught by a team of lecturers. You can seek advice from your Module Leads during their weekly office hours (which are available on the module’s ELE page) or via email. You may need to make an appointment for a specific time, or there may be open drop-in sessions on campus or via Teams/Zoom.
Programme Directors
Each programme (e.g. BSc Psychology, MSc Social and Organisational Psychology) is led by a Programme Director. Their job is to oversee the smooth running of the programme and to liaise with all of the Module Leads to ensure that students make good progress.
You might need to contact them with any programme-level concerns, and they may also be able to advise you on your module choices.
Directors of Education & Student Experience

Dr Hazel Mycroft (left) and Dr Ioanna (Anna) Kapantai (right)
Directors of Education & Student Experience sit above Programme Directors and oversee the smooth running of programmes and modules. This is a shared role and currently the co-directors of Education are Dr. Hazel Mycroft (see above photo) and Dr. Ioanna Kapantai (see above photo). If you encounter any significant difficulties with your studies, your Directors of Education may be able to work with you to resolve these.
You will meet the Directors of Education at your welcome sessions during Freshers’ Week. Outside of their role as Directors of Education and Student Experience, Hazel and Ioanna also teach modules and do their own research. Most probably, most of your contact with them will be in their regular role as academic members of staff teaching you on modules.
