Being part of a linguistically diverse student community brings opportunities to build relevant skills for future study and work, but also challenges in terms of adapting to studying in English.

We’re lucky to have a wide range of English language resources available, tailored to meet your academic needs as well as your desire to become more fluent and confident in English. These are provided by the English Language Skills Development, led by Emma Sweeney. The programme includes both language classes and online learning resources.

Our language classes allow you to:

  • Work on your oral fluency - feel confident using English for living and studying in the UK. Make friends and build your confidence for more active participation in seminars and tutorials.
  • Develop your English language skills – for more efficient academic reading and more effective academic writing.
  • Receive individualised feedback and advice in a one-to-one tutorial.

Three types of language classes are available:

  • Subject specific courses: Designed for maximum relevance in different subject areas and disciplines. We run courses specifically for students of Psychology, and students of Sports and Health Science. Our Academic Writing for Science course is also a good choice for students on many different science programmes at the university
  • General Academic English courses: Develop language skills that are similar across discipline and subjects. These courses are popular because students like the idea of studying in an environment where they can meet people from a range of backgrounds.
  • Social and Cultural English: This suite offers opportunities to improve your oral communication skills. There are a range of different course to choose from including exciting options such as Current Issues, Intercultural Communication, English for Employability.

You might also be advised to participate in English Language Skills Development by your Academic Tutor or your Module Tutors - please do take their recommendations seriously and accept the support on offer. If you struggle on alone with language difficulties, you are much more likely to fail academically and not achieve your full potential. We really do want you to get the highest grades possible, and get the most out of your time with us!
