Student on a video call

Being part of a linguistically diverse student community brings opportunities to build relevant skills for future study and work, but also challenges in terms of adapting to studying in English. The English Language Skills Development programme provides a range of opportunities for continuing to improve your English for academic study, future employability, and daily life.

There are three types of language course available:

Subject specific courses:

We run a series of standalone workshops and one-to-one tutorials specifically for students of biomedical sciences. The workshops have been carefully designed in consultation with our contacts to ensure that the content and practice tasks are relevant to your needs.

1) Professional communication skills for healthcare professionals

2) Reflective approaches and thinking

3) Scientific writing

4) Teamwork and groupwork skills

In addition, we offer one-to-one tutorials specifically for biomedical disciplines and a course on Academic Writing for Science where you will study alongside students from other science programmes.

General Academic English courses:

These courses aim to develop language skills that are similar across discipline and subjects. Students often choose these courses because they like the idea of studying in an environment where they can meet students from a range of backgrounds.

Social and Cultural English:

This suite offers opportunities to improve your oral communication skills. There are a range of different courses to choose from including pronunciation, intercultural communication, and language for employability.

You might also be advised to participate in English Language Skills Development by your Academic Tutor or your Module Tutors, please do take their recommendations seriously and accept the support on offer. If you struggle on alone with language difficulties, you are much more likely to fail academically and not achieve your full potential. We really do want you to get the highest grades possible and get the most out of your time with us!
