Your course within the Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES) will belong to a specific discipline - sometimes referred to as a centre. EES is made up of Camborne School of Mines, the Centre for Geography and Environmental Sciences and the Environmental Mathematics Group. The Earth and Environmental Science department is a part of the larger Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy (FESE).

Camborne School of Mines (CSM)

Welcome to the Camborne School of Mines. We hope you have a happy and rewarding time whilst studying towards your degree with us. The geology and mining engineering degrees at CSM will provide you with the academic background and key transferable skills to develop a career in one or more of the many areas of geoscience and mining and beyond.

Centre for Geography and Environmental Sciences (CGES)

A very warm welcome to the Centre for Geography and Environmental Science. We focus on innovative teaching and cutting-edge research on humans’ impact on the natural world at a range of geographical scales, from local landscapes to global climate systems. We offer several degrees, with undergraduate curricula in Geography, Environmental Science, and Marine Science. In addition we offer several MSc degrees, including MSc Sustainable Development; MRes Sustainable Futures and MSc Marine and Coastal Sustainability. Our particular research strengths focus on sustainable development, conservation and policy, social and cultural geography, quaternary science, ocean science, and remote sensing.

Environmental Mathematics Group (EMG)

The EMG group brings together mathematicians and inter-disciplinary data scientists whose research focuses on fundamental environmental and sustainability issues. Responding to the changing environment represents one of the great scientific challenges of our time. Mathematics has a key role to play in meeting this challenge and forms the foundation for a broad range of research.

The Centre for Environmental Mathematics leads MSc programmes on Applied Data Science for addressing Grand Challenges, hosted by the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI). These programmes are aimed at those looking to develop and apply modern techniques from data science and artificial intelligence in an interdisciplinary context, with a focus on energy, health, environment and conservation. Some of the modules are shared with MSc programmes also aligned with the ESI, in particular MSc in Sustainable Development and MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering, as well as MSc programmes from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation, in particular MSc Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology. The ESI will host a number of events for students throughout the year, and we encourage students to explore interdisciplinary collaborations with students and staff from groups within the ESI.
