On most of our undergraduate programmes you are able to choose optional (or ‘elective’) modules from outside of the HASS Faculty. After you have met the compulsory requirements of your programme, you may take up to 30 credits a year outside of your main degree subject(s). These credits count towards the degree award and classification as usual but will not change the title of the degree.
It is important to note that the academic content requirements of some programmes mean that it is not always possible to take credits from outside the programme in every year.
If you’re interested in taking a module from outside your course or programme of study you should first discuss this with your Academic Personal Tutor or Programme Director.
Pathways
In some instances, you can choose optional modules that collectively allow you to have ‘With Proficiency in…’ formally added to your degree title.
Many HaSS Cornwall students access elective language modules via the University’s Language Centre, and if you have capacity in your programme you may be able to complete the 60 credits to have ‘With Proficiency in [insert language]’ added to your degree title. At Penryn we offer modules in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Cornish. Find out more information about the Languages pathway and languages available for undergraduate study.
HaSS Cornwall offers various undergraduate pathways to enable students (where programme specifications allow) to work towards gaining ‘With Proficiency in… ‘. By completing 60 credits (via four 15-credit modules) from a set of modules in your chosen area, you can opt into the pathway and request that your proficiency is added to your degree title. You will need to be enrolled on a programme with sufficient optional modules to allow this; if you’re not sure, you can ask your Programme Director whether this is possible on your programme. This will vary from department to department and course to course.
