You’re going to be part of a linguistically diverse student community at Exeter, so if you experience challenges with adapting to studying in English you definitely won’t be alone!
We’re lucky to have a wide range of language resources specifically designed for you, tailored to meet your academic needs as well as your desire to become more fluent and confident in English. This is delivered in HASS by our colleagues at INTO, led by Emma Sweeney.
Doing a university degree in your second language - no matter how good you are - is harder than doing one in your first language. The English Language Skills Development Programme is a university-funded programme and so there is NO cost to the student. It aims to meet your varied needs and requirements!
Our language support allows you to:
- Work on your oral fluency - feel confident using English for living and studying in the UK.
- Make friends and build your confidence - for more active participation in seminars and more effective presentations.
- Develop your English language skills - for more efficient academic reading and more effective academic writing.
- Receive individualised feedback and advice in a one-to-one tutorial.
You might also be advised by your Academic Tutor or your Module Tutors to take up resources for your language during your time here - please do take their recommendations seriously and accept the resources on offer. If you struggle on alone with language difficulties, you are much more likely to fail academically and not achieve your full potential. We really do want you to get the highest grades possible and get the most out of your time with us!
Participation is easy. Once you have activated your Exeter IT account, visit the English Language Development website to browse the timetable and enrol. You can browse other resources on the Guided Independent Learning site. Here you can also find out more about the Viva Engage community, where you can ask questions, get advice, and see what other students are asking about.
Workshops make use of relevant examples and practice tasks. You are always encouraged to ask questions. There is usually more than one opportunity each week to attend a class, so don’t worry if you end up with a class scheduled at the same time - just go back to the bookings page, cancel your booking and rebook for a different time.
You can also come and chat in confidence to one of our language experts about your aims and concerns, and find out more about the opportunities available to maximise your English skills and develop your cultural competence at your new university. Information on how to book will be available at all our induction events, through your tutor and publicised on campus.
Using the arrows or blue bar below, click through the slides to hear students talk about their experiences.
