As we’ve just seen, you’re going to be part of a linguistically diverse student community, so if you experience challenges with adapting to studying in English you definitely won’t be alone!
Welcome
Please visit our International Welcome Programme which is a combination of online and in person sessions to welcome you to the university and to help you settle into your new life with us.
We’re lucky to have a wide range of language support specifically designed for you, tailored to meet your academic needs as well as your desire to become more fluent and confident in English. This is delivered in FHLS by our colleagues at INTO, led by Emma Sweeney. You will find the timetable for classes and workshops aimed at your subject area here.
Doing a university degree in your second language - no matter how good you are - is harder than doing one in your first language. The Academic English programme is a university-funded programme and so there is NO cost to the student. It aims to meet your varied needs and requirements! Our language support allows you to:
- Work on your oral fluency - feel confident using English for living and studying in the UK. Make friends and build your confidence for more active participation in seminars
- Develop your English language skills – for more efficient academic reading and more effective academic writing.
- Receive individualised feedback and advice in a one-to-one tutorial.
Global Chums
Our incoming international students also have the opportunity to team up with an existing student through the Global Chums Scheme. The “chum” acts as a mentor and source of advice on anything from tips about writing reflective essays to where to find the best shops and restaurants.
For more information about the services available to international students at the University of Exeter see the International Student Support Office Website.
