Welcome - it’s great to know you’ll be joining us here in the University of Exeter Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences! This is the Faculty (called HASS for short) to which your degree programme belongs, and we are excited that you are joining our community.

This short induction course is all about helping you to feel confident and happy during your first couple of weeks with us - and beyond. We’ll also highlight the support you can access throughout your time in our Faculty's Penryn department: the department of Humanities and Social Sciences in Cornwall (also known as 'HaSS Cornwall' - not to be confused with 'HASS'!). We want you to get the most out of your time with us, both in your academic studies and the extra-curricular activities available.

For those of you moving to Cornwall, it may be the first time you’ve lived away from your family and friends, and for some of you in a new country. We want to help you settle in and make friends as quickly as possible. We have an amazing Students’ Union which offers a huge range of clubs and societies, but we also want you to establish friendship groups within your programme. 

This course is also here to help you get to know your fellow students via the discussion forums. Collectively you come from over 100 different countries, so you have some great opportunities to make friends with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Introducing your Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor of Education...

Duncan Russel

My name is Duncan Russel and I'm the current Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education in HASS. I’ll be overseeing your academic development throughout your time with us, making sure that you have access to all of the support you’ll need to achieve your full potential.

As you work through this course, don't hesitate to post comments in the forums and share your thoughts and experiences with the other students who are just starting here. Annabel and Jennie from our HASS team will also be on hand online to answer any questions you have. 

We’re hoping this course will get you off to a flying start at Exeter, and really look forward to getting to know you during your studies. Please be aware that some of the links in the activities that you’re about to explore will only work once you’ve activated your Exeter IT account, and those of you participating from abroad may have difficulty viewing some of the additional videos from your home country, but I hope you find the information and activities useful.
