The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is a unique interdisciplinary department, built on our five shared values:

Community

We wish to build a collaborative and inclusive learning environment that is mindful of our multiple histories, and that seeks to be compassionate, kind, and generous towards others. We foster participatory values that respect the diversity of our staff and students.

Belonging

Everybody in our community has earned their place here. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is comprised of its students and staff, each of whom shapes the community. This is a source of pride and responsibility; it is incumbent upon students and staff to build and sustain a respectful and proactive community which recognizes and values its strength in diversity. Nobody is ‘a better fit’.

Integrity

University life is not about ‘winning’ at any cost. Integrity is a more valuable quality than intelligence. It encompasses honesty, fair play, trustworthiness and dependability. These are not values to be confined to a classroom but which must be pursued and upheld in all aspects of life.

Endeavour

University is a privilege; we respond to that by making the most of the opportunity. Staff and students alike must take pride in their work. Embrace responsibility for your efforts, pursue a love of learning and cultivate curiosity in knowledge and thought. ‘Perfect’ is not the point; progress is.

Sustainability

Our ways of thinking are rooted in interdisciplinary learning. We encourage creativity by fostering individual ingenuity and creating an environment for growth and change; recognizing different learning needs, and pedagogical practices and bringing them together to create a sustainable learning experience.

Activity: Who or what inspired you to choose your degree?

There are lots of reasons why we choose to study different subjects at university. Sometimes it is because of a book we read, a podcast we listened to or a place we have visited and been inspired by. Sometimes it is because of the work of a particular person or a conversation with someone. We would love to know some of the reasons which lead you to start your journey as an undergraduate here.

My teachers inspired me to choose History & Politics as they encouraged me to voice my opinions. My family inspired me with our family discussions about world events.

My AP US History teacher and AP European History teacher both inspired me to pursue Law and Business because of the debates and case studies that we had in class and the rigorous workload.

My Law Society teacher at school inspired me to study Law. They encouraged us to discuss numerous law topics and voice our opinions in a passionate way. They supported us in determining which area of law suits and interests us the best.
