The Department of Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies is an interdisciplinary department bringing together multiple languages, art history, visual culture, linguistics, literary studies, translation studies, museum studies and gender and identity studies, and other related fields.

You can learn more about who we are and what we do on our webpages for Modern Languages and Cultures and Art History and Visual Culture.

See you very soon, and don’t forget to check your Timetable for the range of welcome events we’ll be running in Welcome Week!

Key contacts

You will each be assigned a personal tutor whom you will meet as part of your academic induction in Welcome Week. This person will be your first port of call for any questions you might have. Other key contacts include:

  • Head of Department - Professor Fiona Cox F.M.Cox@exeter.ac.uk
  • Directors of Education and Student Experience – Dr Jonathan Bradbury J.Bradbury@exeter.ac.uk and Dr Meredith Hale m.m.hale@exeter.ac.uk
  • Senior Tutor - Dr Zoe Boughton Z.C.Boughton@exeter.ac.uk
  • Deputy Senior Tutor – Dr Adam Horsley A.Horsley@exeter.ac.uk
  • Employability and Placement Adviser – Dr Clémentine Force C.Force@exeter.ac.uk

Preparing for Your Degree

We don’t expect you to complete any preparatory work before you get here, but if you’re keen to acclimatise yourself to your course and do a little reading before term starts, we’ve put together some suggested reading material for Modern Languages and Art History and Visual Culture. You are not expected to read all of these works – just pick and choose the titles that appeal most.

Our community

We would also encourage you to look out for the different academic societies advertising their events in Welcome Week and throughout the year. They are friendly subject societies that run social events and other activities.

Alongside events we run ourselves, from quizzes to film screenings to pizza parties, we’re always keen to hear your ideas about things you’d like to do in the departmental community.

If you have any questions about studying languages, art history, or visual culture at Exeter, please post these in the Forum below! To post, simply click 'REPLY.'

Please be aware that any comments and contributions in this forum are open to the general public and NOT just other students in the cohort.

Once you have finished reading about your department(s), you can skip to end of this section rather than clicking next and reading through all department pages.
