You are joining a large, friendly and lively department located in a wonderful part of the UK, and we look forward to getting to know you and welcoming you into our community. You can find out a bit more about us and our specialisms through our staff profiles.

We’ll tell you more about our education team during Welcome Week, including who to contact about what and where else to find support and guidance.
Information for students of the Law School
The Law School section on the HASS Student Gateway (on ELE), contains a range of information about life at the University of Exeter and your studies within the Law School. You'll be able to access this page when you have activated your university IT account, so you may wish to make a note to visit the Gateway page once that is set up. We’ll show you how to find it during Welcome Week if you have any problems.
What can I do to prepare for my degree?
We don’t expect you to complete any preparatory work before you get here, but if you’re keen to do a little bit of reading or thinking before term starts, we recommend any of the following books about studying law (please note, none of these are essential!):
- Imogen Moore and Craig Newbery-Jones, The Successful Law Student: An insider’s guide to studying law (2nd edition, OUP)
- Catherine Barnard, Janet O’Sullivan, and Graham Virgo, What about Law? Studying Law at University (3rd edition, Bloomsbury)
- Raymond Wacks, Law: A Very Short Introduction (3rd edition, OUP)
Our community
We encourage you to look out for all our student societies advertising their events in Welcome Week and throughout the year. There are lots of course related societies such as the University of Exeter Law Society, European Law Students Association Exeter, International Law Society, University of Exeter Women and Law Society, in addition to all the other student societies which bring together students with common interests and activities. See a full list of societies on the Guild website.
The Law School also looks forward to inviting you to student-staff events, which in the past have included film nights and quiz nights and a mooting competition.
You will have a student representative for Law who you will meet in Welcome Week. You can contact them if you would like to provide feedback on any aspect of your teaching, learning or wider student experience. There will also be the chance to become a student representative for your year group yourself.
Activity: Introduce yourself!
In the meantime, we would love it if you could start getting to know one another by posting a brief introduction in the Forum below, telling us who you are, what programme you are on, and what you are most looking forward to about starting your degree with us.
To post, simply click 'REPLY.'
We are looking forward to meeting you soon!
Please be aware that any comments and contributions in this forum are open to the general public and NOT just other students in the cohort.
Once you have finished reading about your department(s), you can skip to end of this section rather than clicking next and reading through all department pages.
