History students at a desk investigating artifacts

Welcome to the department of Archaeology and History at the University of Exeter!

We look forward to welcoming you onto campus and working with you over the coming years as you learn with us. We know the first few days can be confusing, so to keep things simple, remember that the place to go for information about your course, the library, key contacts, useful links, and ways to get involved in the community are the Archaeology and History sections on the HASS Student Gateway (which you can access when you receive your University login).

You’ll each be assigned an Academic Tutor, who is available to act as an advisor on academic matters throughout your time with us. Our first-year transition officers for archaeology and history are also available to help you navigate your first year. You will soon find out who your module tutors are; if you’d like to know more about them, you can find their details on our academic staff pages.

See you very soon, and don’t forget to check your Timetable and our Archaeology & History Department Eventbrite page for the range of welcome events we’ll be running in Welcome Week!

Preparing for Your Degree

We don’t expect you to complete any preparatory work before you get here, but if you’re keen to acclimatise yourself to your course and do a little reading before term starts, we’ve put together some suggested Archaeology reading material and History reading material to whet your appetite for things to come. You are not expected to read all of these works – just pick and choose the titles that appeal most.

Our Community

We have active student societies for both Archaeology and History, which hold events and socials throughout the year. You can find information on the Archaeology and Forensics society and on the History society

  Activity: Introduce yourself!

For now, feel free to introduce yourselves in the comments below. Tell us who you are, which course you’ll be studying, which area of history and/or archaeology interests you most, and why!

To post, simply click 'REPLY.'

Please be aware that any comments and contributions in this forum are open to the general public and NOT just other students in the cohort.

Once you have finished reading about your department(s), you can skip to end of this section rather than clicking next and reading through all department pages.

Hey! I'm Jack! I'm studying BA History with a study year abroad! Whilst I enjoy various periods of history, my personal favourite bits of history focus on modern history, namely looking at modern China and how it became the global power that it is today and how that impacts the international scene!

Re: 10.1 Archaeology and History

de Daniel Jillings -
Hello, my name is Daniel Jillings and I will be studying BA History for three years. I am most interested in the English Revolution (also known as the English Civil Wars). The mid-seventeenth century fascinates me because it was a time when religious and political radicalism was at its highest point, and many institutions and denominations we know now could derive their origins from the English Revolution. The Quakers, for instance, were founded by George Fox during the 1640s. Also, the person of Oliver Cromwell is extremely interesting, and it could be argued that he contributed to the modern idea of democracy! I could go on about this part of British history for hours, to be honest! However, I love learning more about different parts of British history, such as the Viking invasion of England and the kings and queens. Over the summer, I have been reading many books, such as Sharon Penman's Here Be Dragons, which is linked to the history of Wales in the thirteenth century, and John Peddie's Alfred. Furthermore, I enjoy politics, which is always associated with history. I just love history in general, which is why I want to expand my knowledge by doing a BA in History.

de Honeysuckle Plummer -
Hiya, I’m Honeysuckle, I’ll be studying BA History.
I love looking at history through the timeline of the monarchy and religious systems globally.
Such as Philip the Second of Spain and the reformation or the medieval kings.
Saying that I’m also a fan of the unwritten women throughout history such as Empress Matilda or Hana Hejukova of the Kindertransport.
Really, I just like learning about new parts of History that I haven’t throughly explored yet and getting to know the ones I have better. sonrisa

Re: 10.1 Archaeology and History

de Amelia Corbin -
Hello everyone! My name is Amelia, and I will be doing my MSc in Bioarchaeology! I'm fascinated with most things cemetery/funerary and am absolutely thrilled to be learning more skills and knowledge in that area. My current areas of interest is pre-colonization Mesoamerica and Andean Peru. The subjects I am interested in studying are: social hierarchy, religion/spirituality, and funerary sites. I am extremely interested in learning more digital arch skills - especially photogrammetry which I already have some experience with. My goal is to pursue a career where I get to perform archaeological research and conduct field sites, but would also love to have an opportunity to get involved with helping to mentor/teach/motivate students as well.
